Sports Portrait Sessions – How They Work and How To Prepare

Custom sports portrait sessions are perfect for high school graduation, or to celebrate a milestone in one or more sports. Here’s an overview of how your sports artwork is created, from start to finish.

Step 1: The Consult

There are so many different styles of sports portraits we can create, that I always want to meet with my clients first to see what is right for them. We’ll look at some examples of portraits I’ve created in the past, and discuss some ideas that my clients have. We also have a look at some ways to display the finished artwork, with wood and metal being the most popular. Consults are always complimentary.

Step 2: The Session

For the session, I recommend bring ALL gear for each sport that’s featured, including footwear, sticks, balls, and pads. Ideally the jerseys would be washed prior to the session, or at least tossed in the dryer to help keep them from looking too wrinkled. For graduation sessions, I advise grad to style their hair (and wear makeup, if they normally do) as if they were going to a have a traditional portrait taken.

The session takes place at an open space indoors, with studio lights and in front of a large green screen. The session typically lasts about an hour, depending on the number of uniform changes.

Showcasing multiple sports in a montage style of image is popular among high school graduates.

Step 3: Artwork Selection

After the sports portrait session, I create around 15 composite images from the photos. These can be a single pose, or a montage style that combines multiple poses together. Once the images are ready for selection, we meet again to look at them together and decide on how to best display them. Once orders are placed, in about 3 weeks the finished artwork is ready for delivery.

I love creating sports portraits as the creative possibilities are endless, and I know the finished art pieces will be treasured for a lifetime.
